Chapter 33 - Post 9/11 GI Bill®
Chapter 35 - Dependents' Educational Assistance (DEA)
Chapter 1606 - Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR)
The first step is to visit the VA website and apply for the appropriate benefit. Sending in a hard copy application by postal mail will significantly delay this process. You can also seek help in this process by calling the VA Education Helpline at (888) 442-4551.
Once they have applied for benefits and been approved, students will receive what is called a Certificate of Eligibility (COE). Students can also go to the VA website and see how many months of benefits they have used and how many remain. The newest and fastest way to get your VA Benefits questions answered is by using the Ask VA tool online.
Chapter 31 – Academic Worksheet Request
The Active Duty Tuition Assistance (TA) program provides financial assistance for active duty service members to complete a high school diploma, associate, baccalaureate, and master’s degrees, as well as certificate programs. TA is not authorized for programs beyond a master’s degree and will not be approved to complete credentials at the same or a lower educational level.
All active duty service members, Drilling Reserves, and Drilling Guards must speak with their Education Service Officer(ESO) before contacting/applying for Augusta Technical College. After meeting with your ESO, you will complete the following steps to apply and access your benefits.

Augusta Technical College is pleased to participate in a Voluntary Education Partnership with the United States Department of Defense (DoD). As part of this partnership, the college has an active Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the DoD. This MOU allows military-connected students to know that Augusta Technical College is an excellent choice for them to pursue higher education. Specifically, in the MOU, Augusta Technical College commits to the following practices:
Recruiting, Marketing, and Advertising
All service members (active-duty, reservists, and Georgia National Guard members) using military Tuition Assistance are directed to speak with their Educational Services Officer (ESO) or counselor within their Military Service before enrolling. Augusta Technical College follows Department of Education regulations and complies with C.F.R. 668.71-668.75 and 668.14.
The Augusta Technical College Office of Admissions staff follows the principles of ethics set forth by the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG).
Augusta Technical College and its staff members will not:
Provide any bonus, commission, or other incentive payment based directly or indirectly on securing enrollments or federal financial aid (including TA funds) to any persons or entities engaged in any student recruiting, admission activities, or making decisions regarding the award of student financial assistance.
Engage in high-pressure recruitment tactics such as making multiple unsolicited contacts (3 or more), including contacts by phone, email, video conference, or in person, or engaging in same-day recruitment and registration to secure Service member enrollments.
Academic Counseling and Post-Graduation Job Opportunities
Augusta Technical College has a Military Service Center (MSC) staffed to support Veterans and Service Members seeking information on the Tuition Assistance (TA) program, Title IV funding, and VA educational benefits. They are familiar with institutional services for Service Members who are seeking information about academic counseling, financial aid counseling, and job search support. They can also provide information about other services regarding campus and community resources.
The staff in the MSC can assist with the following:
- Assist in the transition process of veterans, military, and family members to an academic setting.
- Connect students with appropriate departments and resources.
- Assist in the overall development and enhancement of college military/veteran-friendly policies and procedures for veterans, service members, dependents, and survivors.
- Assist prospective and current students in the application, registration, and enrollment process for admission and progression toward degrees.
Return Policy for Tuition Assistance (TA) Funds
Augusta Technical College’s TA return policy aligns with the Department of Education rules for unearned aid. A refund of 100% will be given until the end of the drop/add period for each semester. Students who formally withdraw or who are formally withdrawn from all classes will be subject to the refund policy for tuition and other fees. This policy decreases the amount of refund available at regular intervals during the term. Students must withdraw from all classes to be eligible for a refund. After a certain percentage of the term, 60%, no refund will be available.
The My Career Advancement Account Scholarship is a workforce development program that provides up to $4,000 in financial assistance to eligible military spouses for the pursuit or maintenance (including continuing education courses) of a license, certification, or associate's degree necessary to gain employment in an occupation or career field.

Each semester that you choose to use benefits, you must complete an Enrollment Certification Request. The form will require your banner web log in information and will provide a place to upload your Certificate of Eligibility (COE).
Students can request to be certified for benefits as early as 90 days before the beginning of a term. All current Augusta Tech students will be notified by email when the form for the next semester is open for certification requests. Students must be registered for classes in a current or upcoming term before requesting to use their benefits.
Once your TA is approved and classes entered in the AI or AIM portal, email your authorization to stu.accounts@mpeaffiliate.com and military@mpeaffiliate.com.
Once your MYCAA is approved, email your authorization to stu.accounts@mpeaffiliate.com and military@mpeaffiliate.com.
Step 1: Initial enrollment for federal VA education benefits establishes eligibility for monthly stipends (and book stipends for 100% Chapter 33 students) paid out by the federal VA.
- Monthly stipend payments do not begin until the month AFTER school starts.
- All questions concerning monthly and/or book stipends should be directed to the federal VA.
Step 2: After the add/drop period for the semester, student enrollment will be amended to confirm their registered hours and to enter their tuition and fees (for Chapter 31 and 33 students).
VA Certification Notes
- Students will be certified in the order requests are received. Students will receive a system-generated message at their smartweb email from Etrieve Mail once they are certified.
- We recommend that students enroll in classes and request to be certified as early as possible after the form is released for the upcoming term to expedite their monthly stipend for the next term.
- All students' final registered hours, final grades, and graduation status will be verified at the end of the semester. Changes in enrollment may result in debt to the VA and/or Augusta Technical College.
- All stipends and Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) payments are sent directly to the bank account or address on file with the federal VA. You can update your direct deposit with the VA online or by calling (800) 827-1000.
To continue receiving monthly payments Chapter 35 (Dependents’ Educational Assistance) students in a Diploma or Technical Certificate program must verify enrollment monthly. Chapter 30 and 33 students must verify enrollment monthly if they are enrolled half-time (6 credit hours) or more.

Community & On-Campus Resources
Military Service Center (MSC) - Augusta Campus
Augusta Technical College’s Military Success Center is a space created specifically for military-affiliated students. Located in building 1300 room 245, it began as a grant from the Augusta Warrior Project and is still supported in many ways by AWP.
Resources for military-affiliated students:
- Knowledgeable Staff
- Veteran-to-Veteran Support
- A quiet space to study or rest between classes
- CAC reader access upon request
- Computer Access
- A television with donated blu-ray/dvd movies
- Coffee station, light snacks and drinks
- Microwave and refrigerator
ALL students should complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) which opens on October 1st every year for the next academic year. This information helps Augusta Tech award you grants (money you don’t have to pay back!) that you may not know you are eligible for from the federal government.
We also encourage students to utilize the Award Springs Scholarship Management Platform to apply for Augusta Tech Specific Scholarships.
Additionally, if you scroll down our page, you will find a list of scholarships explicitly for veterans, service members, military spouses, and military children from organizations that love to support military-connected students!
Yes! We STRONGLY recommend that you do.
Yes, however, scholarships that are solely for tuition and fees will be subtracted from Chapter 31 and 33 tuition and fee payments.
Make sure you complete a Schedule Change Form and select Military Orders as your Reason for Withdrawal.
Augusta Technical College only certifies enrollment for outside such as CHAMPVA through National Student Clearinghouse. Instructions on how to retrieve your enrollment certification request can be found on the Student Records website.
Since our office is NOT the federal VA, we do not have the answers to some of your questions and must refer you to the federal VA. The contact information for the VA is always right underneath MSC contact information on our website!
The VA offers an online comparison tool of all benefits that can be used at the College. You can see what your MHA and/or stipend will be using the tool. Periodically, the government will update the amount of monthly payment for cost of living. You can check current rates for your chapter benefit on the VA Benefit Rates website.
Monthly payments begin the month after school starts, if certification was requested in a timely manner. Students are encouraged to submit the Certification Request for the semester for which they wish to be certified as soon as they are registered for classes. Certification can happen up to 90 days before the first day of class. After students receive their initial payment, the VA will distribute their MHA and/or stipends each month for the prior month.
Students who are certified late in the semester may experience a delay in their benefits. Generally, you will be paid from the 1st to the 5th of the NEXT month after you are certified. However, the closer you certify to the end of the month, the more likely it will take the VA until the 2nd month to pay you. For example, you were certified on August 25th, generally you will not get paid until October 1st or after.
Chapter 33 students may receive a book stipend earlier than MHA. Chapter 31 students will have their book and supply amounts sent directly to the Augusta Tech Campus Store.
For VA questions concerning MHA (Monthly Housing Allowance) or stipends, you can use the new Ask VA tool online or call the VA Educational Benefits helpline at (888) 442-4551. This is especially important if you need documentation about the amount of your MHA or stipend!
All stipends and Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) payments are sent directly to the bank account or address on file with the VA. You can always call the VA to discover where the payments are going. For VA questions concerning MHA (Monthly Housing Allowance) or stipends, you can use the new Ask VA tool online or call the VA Educational Benefits helpline at (888) 442-4551.
The VA will not cover the late fee, application fee (Chapter 31 exception), or graduation fee (Chapter 31 exception).
All Chapter 31 and 33 students can avoid the late fee by registering for courses and completing the Enrollment Certification Request BEFORE the add/drop date each semester.
For Chapter 33 - 100% students, tuition and mandatory fees are covered once your Enrollment Certification Request has been processed. For Chapter 33 students that are not 100%, you will need to pay the remaining balance that should be available on your account approximately 1 to 2 weeks after your Enrollment Certification Request has been processed.
For Chapter 31 students, tuition and mandatory fees are covered for every semester that is approved by your VA VR&E counselor via a PO Authorization.
For those using Tuition Assistance (TA), your balance should update after you have submitted your authorization to stu.accounts@mpeaffiliate.com and military@mpeaffiliate.com.
For Chapter 30, 35, and 1606 students, you are responsible for ensuring that your debt to the College is paid.
***We strongly recommend ALL students complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) which opens on October 1st every year for the next academic year.
You must update your direct deposit with the federal VA. You can do so online or by calling (800) 827-1000.
Things to consider before dropping:
After speaking with your advisor and officially dropping the class through Bannerweb, no additional action is needed for a regular drop request. The Military Service Center will automatically verify any change in credit hours within 1 week of the drop occurring.
If you are requesting to use the 6-credit-hour credit exclusion, mitigating circumstances option available through the VA, please complete the Mitigating Circumstances Notification.
- For full benefits, you must stay a full-time student. This means taking at least 12 credit hours during the regular semester.
- If you drop below full-time status, your benefits will change, and you may owe the VA money from the last date you attended class.
- If you drop below 7 credit hours, all stipends may stop, and you may owe the VA money.

What is Work Study?
There are two different types of work study programs available to veterans and military-affiliated students.
- Federal Work Study is available to all Augusta Technical College students who qualify. Qualification is based on your financial package and requires you to fill out a FAFSA. Any position through this office will be posted on Easy HR with all other positions.
- VA Work Study is a tax-free education benefit for students using Ch. 30, 31, 33, 35, or 1606 at the Washington, DC minimum wage. Augusta Technical College is a VA Work Study site. Students who qualify should complete a VA Work Study application, and submit it via the VA Work Study Submission form. (To be created in Etrieve)
VA Work Study Qualifications
If you meet the qualifications below, you may complete a summer VA Work Study application.
- You are enrolled at least ¾ time (9 credit hours) for the current or upcoming semester at Augusta Technical College.
- You must be using VA education benefits (Chapters 30, 31, 33, 35, or 1606).
Academic support services are provided to Augusta Tech students by the staff of the Success Center on the Augusta Campus, Columbia County, Thomson and Waynesboro Sites. The free services include tutoring in credit classes such as Biology, Chemistry, Engineering Technology (basic), English, Introduction to Computers (COMP 1000), Math, Physics, and Psychology.
Tutoring assistance is also available via the VA for Chapter 30 and 33 students. You must be enrolled in an educational program for half-time or more, must be taking a course that’s difficult, and you have to take the course as part of your educational program. Note: There is a funding limit to this benefit that can cause funding to be taken from Chapter 30 benefits if the amount is exceeded.
The Military Lending Library provides very limited assistance to students who have exhausted all financial assistance including the HOPE Grant and the Pell Grant and need assistance acquiring books for class. Books are loaned on a first-come, first-serve basis. The applications are available a month before the semester begins.
Questions about your MLL Application should be directed to the library at library@mpeaffiliate.com or 706.771.4164.
The MLL also takes used textbook donations.
This section of the website is reserved for scholarships that all military-connected students may find useful. If you learn of any that can be added, please email military@mpeaffiliate.com.

Augusta Technical College is committed to using the College Financing Plan to provide all prospective veteran and service members, with a personalized Shopping Sheet that contains standardized information describing the cost of attending and the federal and state financial aid available.
The College Financing Plan is made available through your BannerWeb Login.
To learn more about the College Financing Plan regulations visit U.S. Department of Education website.
The Financial Aid Shopping Sheet is a consumer tool Augusta Technical College is using to notify students who file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and are using Veterans Affairs Educational Benefits. It is a standardized form that is designed to simplify the information that prospective students receive about costs and financial aid so that they can make informed decisions.
Only students who file a FAFSA and indicate that they are using VA Education Benefits will have access to the Financial Aid Shopping Sheet.
You can access it by going to SMARTWEB from g83k.mpeaffiliate.com. Select BannerWeb and login using your student email and password. Select “Admissions, Student and Financial Aid". Select “Financial Aid”, “Shopping Sheet”, and “current aid year”.
The estimated cost of attendance (COA) is intended to provide you with an idea of what it will cost you to attend Augusta Tech as a full-time student, enrolling for three terms: Fall, Spring, and Summer. The Cost of Attendance includes an estimated budget amount for tuition and fees, room and board, books, transportation and miscellaneous personal expenses. Your own expenses will vary depending on a variety of factors, including enrollment, housing and lifestyle choices.
Veteran -related benefits are not included on the Shopping Sheet because the amounts cannot be determined until you have applied to the Veterans Administration and received a Certificate of Eligibility.
The net cost on the Financial Aid Shopping Sheet reflects a calculation showing the estimated cost of attendance minus the total grants and scholarships awarded to you based on your eligibility after the filing the FAFSA. It does not reflect the amount which you are responsible to pay after your VA educational benefits are applied (POST 911) and it does not factor in personal choices that may increase or reduce your actual cost of attendance.
The metrics related to graduation rate, loan default rate (we do not participate in the federal student aid loan program) and median borrowing reflect average statistics for full-time students. Your own experience may be different.
An in-depth description of cohort default rates and how the rates are calculated is available on the U.S. Department of Education's Default Prevention and Management website.
- A Cohort Default Rate (CDR) is the percentage of a school's borrowers who enter repayment on certain Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program or William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program loans during a particular federal fiscal year (FY), October 1st to September 30th, and default or meet other specified conditions prior to the end of the second following fiscal year. If Augusta Technical College’s CDR ever rises above the national average, this site will be updated to reflect such a change.
